Oak Bay Police warn of cougar sighting in Cadboro Bay near Royal Victoria Yacht Club

Residents of Cadboro Bay are being warned of a cougar sighting near the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in the evening on Tuesday, January 7th.

Oak Bay Police say the cougar was observed at around 7:15 p.m. on the ocean side of 3500 Beach Drive, which is also very close to Gyro Park.

Police say BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified of the situation and for the time being, are advising caution to residents and park users in this area.

Oak Bay Police have provided the following safety precautions for those living in the impacted area of the cougar sighting:

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Keep a close eye on children and pets, especially around dawn and dusk
  • Avoid hiking or jogging alone: Travel in groups whenever possible
  • Make noise: Clap your hands, shout or use a bear bell to deter cougars
  • Do not approach a cougar: If you see a cougar, maintain a safe distance and back away slowly—never run
  • Secure attractants: Store garbage securely, keep pet food indoors, and clean up any fallen fruit from trees
