If you noticed a lot of commotion around the Johnson Street bridge late Saturday, there was a good reason for it. Victoria firefighters performed a chilly water rescue over the weekend, fortunately with a positive outcome for all involved.
On November 23rd at around 11:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched in response to reports of a person in the water near the Johnson Street bridge.
Upon arrival, backup emergency responders were called to assist in locating the individual, and each group was delegated tasks for search efficiency.
Responders conducted searches of the waterway as well as the shoreline.
The person was located beneath the outriggers of a large private vessel, and crews quickly began maneuvering into position for a rescue.
According to firefighters, due to the person’s location, a traditional rescue from the vessel was not possible, and had to send crew members into the water.
After a successful retrieval, the individual was handed over to the ambulance services and the firefighters were promptly rewarmed.
“Great work to the Officers and members of B Platoon,” Victoria Firefighters said in a social media post.
