The District of Sooke has announced that construction will soon begin on the much-anticipated Little River Crossing Project.
The project’s scope is to build a multi-use trail and bridge to increase connectivity in the municipality.
The District says this new trail and bridge will connect Sunriver Way to Poirier Elementary School with a bridge boardwalk and viewing point.
This is meant to make it possible for pedestrians to travel between Sooke’s Town Core and the Sunriver Neighbourhood.
“This project marks an exciting step forward in the development of Sooke’s trail system,” said Mayor Maja Tait.
“It reflects our commitment to creating a walkable, connected community while protecting and enhancing our natural environment, and providing alternative means to get around Sooke to lessen reliance on Highway 14.”

The District says this project will provide a safe and scenic route for pedestrians and cyclists while simultaneously encouraging outdoor activity.
The goal in this endeavour was to ease transportation challenges by offering a sustainable, active transportation option.
Once complete, the approximately 8-kilometre trip on Highway 14 travelled by vehicle will be an approximate 1.2-kilometre walk or bicycle.
Next steps for the project are to award the construction contract by December 2024, prepare the site by February 2025, build the trail and boardwalk by spring 2025 and finish the project by autumn 2025.
