Starting this April, some BC Hydro customers are in for a pleasant surprise as they will see a reduction in their electricity bills.
BC Hydro has announced that beginning on Easter Monday, electricity bills will increase by 2.3 percent. However, this increase will be offset by the introduction of the BC electricity affordability credit.
Customers who qualify for this credit will see a reduction in their electricity expenses compared to the previous year. The credit amount varies depending on the annual electricity consumption of the customer over the last 12 months.
According to BC Hydro, the average residential household will benefit from a total credit of $100. Similarly, commercial businesses and other customers can expect an average credit of $400 or $200,000.
These credits will be applied automatically to eligible bills for a duration of one year, starting in mid-April.
BC Hydro has sent out emails to its customers, informing them about the forthcoming rebate.
To qualify for the BC electricity affordability credit, customers must have been registered with BC Hydro as of March 31st, 2024.
No action is required from customers to claim the credit. BC Hydro says the the credit will be reflected in the bills by April 15th.
The credit falls under a new subsidy in the provincial budget announced by the BC government earlier this year. Its purpose is to assist in alleviating living costs amidst the affordability crisis prevalent across the province.
