Pay-what-you-can Remembrance Day concert returning to Oak Bay

This November, there’s an opportunity to experience some local art and learn more about the experiences of military service members.

The Concert of Remembrance will return to the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre in Oak Bay on Saturday, November 7th, with admission offered on a pay-what-you-can basis.

The concert is presented by the Canadian Heritage Arts Society (CHAS) in partnership with the District of Oak Bay. It brings together students from the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) and the Band of the 5th Field Regiment (BC) to offer attendees an evening of music and theatre that aims to connect generations through remembrance.

The show will begin with some music from the Band of the 5th Field Regiment, which is a unit of the Primary Reserve of the Canadian Armed Forces.

An original theatrical performance from CCPA students will follow, with the students weaving together songs, stories, poems and letters drawn from experiences of war and service.

Organizers say bringing together young performing artists and serving military musicians will offer the audience a performance that creates an opportunity to listen across generations and consider how stories of service can be carried forward.

The show will explore the cost of war, the lives and communities transformed by conflict, the women who stepped forward and what future generations carry forward from conflict.

“This year’s performance is not simply about remembering those who went to war. It is about remembering the people and lives they left behind, and the ways those lives were transformed,” says R.J. Peters, writer and director.

“Ultimately, the concert asks us not only to remember the past, but to consider what we will do with the future that was left to us.”

Organizers say the concert offers an opportunity for performers to engage directly with stories that may be separated from their lives by decades or generations, creating a space for their experiences to be honoured and shared with a new generation.

For audiences, the concert and performances are an invitation to listen, remember and reflect.

The Concert of Remembrance has been taking place for more than two decades, and this year’s performance is intended to continue that tradition while bringing young artists, military musicians, veterans and community audiences together.

Proceeds will be shared between the Canadian Heritage Arts Society and the Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre.

Following the performance on November 7th, CHAS will continue to perform the theatrical portion of the show at parishes, legions, community organizations and long-term care facilities throughout the region at no cost to the venues.
