BC’s police watchdog has wrapped up its investigation into an arrest in Sooke earlier this year that left a man injured.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) announced Thursday that it has concluded its investigation into the March 23rd incident after determining the man’s injuries did not meet the legal definition of serious harm.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. when Sooke RCMP officers were called to a residence in the Otter Point area.

According to the IIO, the property owner had asked police to remove a man from the residence. However, the man refused to leave, leading to an interaction with officers during which he suffered an injury.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Sooke RCMP detachment.

The IIO was notified of the incident three days later and launched an investigation into what happened.

As part of that investigation, officials reviewed police reports, medical records, body-worn camera footage, CCTV footage, photographs and police radio transmissions.

Following that review, the IIO’s chief civilian director determined the man’s injuries did not meet the threshold of serious harm under BC’s Police Act.

As a result, the investigation has been closed.

The IIO is an independent civilian agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers and detention guards in BC that result in serious harm or death, regardless of whether wrongdoing has been alleged.
