Two people were killed in a fatal collision on Highway 19 in the early hours on Thursday morning near Lantzville.
BC Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation and are seeking witnesses and dash-camera video to determine exactly how the crash happened.
Police say that just after 3 a.m. on August 27th, in the southbound lanes of Highway 19 a blue Kia Sedona minivan and a grey Volkswagen Jetta collided head-on.
The two men who were in the grey Volkswagen died at scene.
Police say the occupant of the blue Kia minivan, a 16-year-old female from Nanaimo, was arrested at scene for impaired operation causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
She was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following her arrest.
“Police have already spoken to multiple witnesses who say that the blue Kia minivan was driving north in the southbound lanes at the time of the collision,” said Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
“We need to speak to more witnesses and gather more video to confirm the exact sequence of events.”
According to investigators, the blue Kia minivan was seen in Nanaimo four hours before the collision.
Police ask that anyone who witnessed the blue Kia minivan driving between Third Street and Pine Street, Nanaimo, and Island Highway North near Lantzville to contact them.
Anyone with information on this collision, or dash-camera video is asked to call BC Highway Patrol Parksville at (250) 954-2953, citing file number (4201) 2026-28277.
Southbound lanes remain closed as of this publication.

In the meantime, instead of tying up traffic for hours on end, why can't the traffic be reduced to single lane, using 1/2 of the open lane, would need some manpower to control it, and monitor it, may be slow moving but better than not moving at all.
