Nanaimo RCMP has launched an investigation into a suspicious fire that caused extensive damage to the Nanaimo Judo Club, located at 110 Machleary Street.
Police received a report of the fire at just before 5 a.m. on Saturday July 11th and responded along with Nanaimo Fire Rescue.
According to initial reports from fire crews, the blaze appeared to have originated in an exterior stairwell on the north side of the building before spreading into the building through a ventilation system and finally, into the attic.
Firefighters contained the fire to the building with no secondary damage reported to surrounding buildings.
When the judo club was inspected after the blaze was put out, police say there was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the interior of the building.
Witnesses reported seeing flames but did not observe anyone leaving the scene.
As of this publication, the cause of the fire is undetermined although the incident remains under investigation.
