3 Vancouver Island communities among top cat-loving cities in Canada

How much do you love your cat?

Some new data from PetSmart Charities of Canada is indicating that Vancouver Island communities are particularly fond of their feline friends, with several island cities placing in their Top 25 Cat-Loving Cities in Canada list.

The list, which ranked Courtenay at number six, Nanaimo at number nine and Victoria at number 10, measured the numbers of pet adoptions and purchases of cat toys, treats and enrichment products at PetSmart locations across the country in 2026.

This year’s list was the second annual edition, and saw Victoria and Courtenay return to the top 10, with Nanaimo showing up as a newcomer after the 2025 iteration.

Langley took the number one spot for the second year running.

“Cats have become an increasingly important part of family life for Canadians from coast to coast,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president at PetSmart Charities of Canada.

“This year’s ranking shines a light on the growing role cats play in people’s lives and highlights the many ways pet parents continue to celebrate and care for their feline family members.”

The list comes out just ahead of National Adoption Week, taking place from July 20th to 26th.

According to PetSmart Charities of Canada, July marks a time of the year called “kitten season,” when kittens are born and shelters and rescues are flooded with vulnerable kittens and cats.

The organization will be honouring National Adoption Week with special deals and discounts from July 20th to August 2nd.
