A new affordable housing project is being planned in Langford’s Westhills neighbourhood.
On Tuesday, June 9th, Habitat for Humanity Victoria announced their newest affordable housing project in partnership with the City of Langford.
The organization said in a release that they have purchased land on Irwin Road and intend to build a 26-unit townhome development on the plot.
The project will offer housing options to a diverse group of residents, including working professionals, growing families and those with accessibility needs.
Habitat Victoria received funding from the City of Langford in the form of a per-door grant for the first phase of this project, encompassing 16 units.
This grant comes from the City’s Affordable Housing Reserve Fund, in alignment with the Attainable Housing Ownership Program, which is funded entirely by developer contributions—not tax dollars.
“As a charity we take stewarding our donor dollars seriously, and we chose to build where we can maximize the impact of our donor dollars with government investment,” said Carmen Rempel, CEO of Habitat Victoria.
“The City of Langford have been brilliant partners with us, seeing the value in what our program offers a community, and being willing to invest in it.”
Rempel went on to say that Habitat Victoria’s ReStore and offices have already been in Langford for 17 years, and that having a local project is incredibly gratifying for the organization.
Applications will open for families after a development permit has been secured for phase one of the project.
The organization said that the City of Langford’s decision to include Habitat Victoria in their affordable housing initiatives has enabled the project to move forward.
“The City is delighted to partner with Habitat for Humanity to bring more affordable housing to Langford,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson.
“Projects like these strengthen the community and help residents put down roots close to home. This project aligns with the City’s housing goals, supporting long-term stability for Langford families.”
The organization noted that after moving into a Habitat Victoria home, studies have shown that partner families experience improvements in their physical health, education, employment, financial security and community involvement.
This project will mark 50 homes built by Habitat for Humanity Victoria in the Capital Regional District to date.
