A new hotel has officially opened its doors in Sidney, bringing a fresh option for both short visits and extended stays just minutes from Victoria International Airport.
TownePlace Suites by Marriott Sidney held its grand opening on Monday, May 4th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local partners, community members and project leaders.
The three-storey, 129-room hotel sits at the corner of the Pat Bay Highway and Stirling Way, a location that has quickly made it a noticeable addition for drivers heading up and down the Saanich Peninsula.
While the hotel was initially expected to open late last year, the $35-million development is now fully operational following roughly two years of construction.
Backed by the Ontario-based Kothari Group, the project marks the company’s first development in the Greater Victoria area.
Designed as an extended-stay hotel, the property offers a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites, each equipped with full kitchens and workspace areas.
The concept is geared toward travellers looking for flexibility, whether they are staying a single night or settling in for longer visits.
Amenities include a fitness centre, swimming pool and approximately 1,500 square feet of meeting space, catering to both leisure guests and business travellers.
Speaking at the opening, Kothari Group representative Andy Zhao said the company has felt welcomed by the local community since breaking ground.
“Although we are new to this area, we feel very much embraced by this community,” Zhao said, adding with a laugh that he’s already adopted some local habits, including ditching umbrellas and embracing the outdoor lifestyle.
Zhao also credited partnerships with the Town of Sidney, W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation, the Victoria Airport Authority and Marriott along with contractors and collaborators across the country.
“Through this process, we haven’t just completed the project, we also built meaningful relationships across the island and we really value that,” he said.
The hotel’s location near the airport positions it well to serve a steady flow of travellers.
Victoria International Airport saw more than 1.9 million passengers last year while nearly one million visitors arrived in the region by cruise ship.
Now that the hotel is done, there are plans to build a separate 5,000-square-foot restaurant, which is slated to begin construction on June 1st.
While speculation has circulated online on what the restaurant will be, developers have not confirmed which restaurant will move in.
With its official opening now complete, the new hotel is expected to play a role in accommodating the region’s growing number of visitors while giving Sidney another modern hospitality option close to home.
