Oak Bay Police responded to 53 calls for service between April 13th and April 19th, with several incidents highlighting traffic enforcement and public safety concerns.

Among them was a significant speeding violation late on April 18th. Officers conducting enforcement in the 900 block of Beach Drive stopped a vehicle travelling 87 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone.

The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days, as required under provincial law.

Police also conducted impaired driving roadblocks overnight on April 17th at various locations throughout Oak Bay.

One driver received a 12-hour driving prohibition, and their licence was temporarily seized.

In a separate incident around 1:50 a.m. on April 18th, an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 2700 block of Oak Bay Avenue. A roadside screening resulted in a “warn” reading.

The driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition, their vehicle was impounded, and their driver’s licence was seized.

Police are reminding the public that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair driving ability and are urging people to plan ahead before heading out.

Earlier in the week, police were called to Willows Beach after a beach fire was reported just after 8:30 p.m. on April 16th.

Those involved were educated on local bylaws, which prohibit beach fires in Oak Bay and extinguished the fire themselves. Violations can result in a $260 fine.

Police also assisted in recovering a stolen smartwatch reported missing from a public change room. Using built-in tracking technology, the owner was able to locate the device at a nearby residential building.

Officers attended and spoke with the individual in possession of the watch, which was returned without incident.

No charges are being pursued.
