Two individuals fined $6,000 for killing grizzly bear on Texada Island

An investigation into the killing of a grizzly bear on Texada Island that last summer has concluded.

Two individuals, Kody Bevan and Seneca Antony, have been found responsible and issued fines of $3,000 each.

The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) investigation was launched into the killing of the grizzly last July when the organization received reports that the animal may have been shot.

Officers located the animal deceased the next day.

Both Bevan and Antony pleaded guilty and were sentenced in Powell River provincial court for failing to promptly report the wounding or killing of a grizzly bear, which is a violation under the Wildlife Act.

According to BCCOS, $2,000 from each of Bevan and Antony’s fines will be directed to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.

This grizzly killing is particularly tragic, as the animal had been identified for relocation by the Province and local First Nations.

“The timing is especially unfortunate as we were actively working with First Nations on a new plan to attempt to capture and translocate the grizzly bear from Texada Island to a remote area up the Coast, far away from communities,” said Randene Neill, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, at the time the grizzly was found dead.

The bear was spotted on Texada Island on July 10th, 2025, plans were underway to relocate it, but ultimately the bear was shot and killed on July 14th.
