A significant early morning fire destroyed three power yachts at Sidney’s Van Isle Marina on Sunday, with all three vessels later sinking, according to the marina.
The fire broke out shortly after 7:30 a.m. and prompted a large, coordinated emergency response.
Van Isle Marina confirmed that no one was onboard the yachts at the time of the fire and that no injuries were reported.
In a statement, the marina thanked the Sidney Fire Department, North Saanich Fire Department, Central Saanich Fire Department, Sidney RCMP, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation for their rapid and coordinated response.
Marine fire response trailers were deployed early, and officials said the combined efforts helped contain the fire and prevent further damage to nearby vessels and infrastructure.
The Town of Sidney confirmed earlier in the day that the fire had been suppressed and that environmental response efforts were underway.
Fuel containment and surface cleanup are currently in progress, with environmental protection listed as a top priority.
Salvage planning is now underway and will proceed in coordination with the appropriate authorities to safely remove the sunken vessels and debris.
Van Isle Marina said all affected boat owners have been contacted, and temporary dock closures remain in place.
At this time, officials say there is no ongoing risk to public safety. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
