Police confirmed at least nine victims are dead following a mass shooting at a secondary school and a nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, BC, as investigators continue working to determine the full scope of the tragedy.
During a media scrum Tuesday evening, BC RCMP confirmed that officers responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at about 1:20 p.m., where six people were found dead inside, as well as the body of the shooter.
Another person later died while being transported to hospital. Two additional people were found dead at a residential property believed to be connected to the incident, police said.
The suspect is believed to have suffered what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.|
RCMP said the suspect has been identified but no information about the individual is being released at this time.

Police told media Tuesday evening that they do not believe there are any outstanding suspects and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators would not confirm how many of the deceased were students or adults, nor whether the victims were connected to the suspect. RCMP said that work is ongoing to determine relationships, timelines and motive.
“Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events,” police said in a statement.
Tumbler Ridge is a small community in northeastern BC, located roughly 120 kilometres southeast of Dawson Creek and about 400 kilometres northeast of Prince George.
Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has approximately 175 students in Grades 7 to 12, according to the province’s website.
A local police emergency alert was issued earlier in the afternoon urging residents to shelter in place. That alert has since been cancelled.
In a notice posted online, the Peace River South school district said Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the remainder of the week due to the tragic events.
RCMP said there are no updates at this time on whether the death toll could increase.
The investigation remains ongoing, with more information expected as police continue to piece together what happened.
Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger are scheduled to hold a press conference at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
