An elderly driver was taken to hospital early Thursday morning after being stopped for driving the wrong way on the Pat Bay Highway in Saanich.
According to Saanich Police, an officer conducted a traffic stop just after 4:30 a.m. on January 22nd after observing a vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Vernon Avenue.
That section of roadway is where the Pat Bay Highway transitions into Vernon Avenue in front of the police detachment.
Police said Emergency Health Services were called to the scene out of concern for the driver’s wellbeing. After being assessed on site, the driver was transported to hospital for further medical attention.
A request for a medical review of the driver’s licence has been submitted to Road Safety BC, police confirmed.
The incident comes after a video was shared on social media earlier Thursday by the Facebook page Shit Drivers: Road Rant & Rave, Victoria BC, which showed what was described as a high-speed, wrong-way driver travelling on the Pat Bay Highway.
Saanich Police confirmed the driver shown in the video was stopped shortly after 4:30 a.m. and no further details about the driver’s condition have been released.
