A series of explosions followed by a fire in downtown Victoria early Friday morning led to a temporary power outage and road closures.

According to VicPD, officers were called to assist the Victoria Fire Department at approximately 3:43 a.m. on February 13th at the intersection of Quadra Street and Johnson Street after reports of numerous explosions.

When first responders arrived, they located a garbage can and a hydro pole that had been set on fire. The blaze caused a power outage in the 800 block of Johnson Street and traffic in the area was closed while crews worked at the scene.

A video that has since surfaced online appears to show the base of a telephone pole engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to douse the fire.

At 1:55 p.m. on Friday, BC Hydro said power had been restored to the area and listed vandalism as the cause of the outage.

Police say power has now been restored and traffic has reopened. No injuries were reported.

The incident is being treated as suspicious and remains under investigation.

Investigators continue to gather evidence. Anyone with information who has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact the E-Comm non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 ext. 1 and reference file number 2026-6172.
