An online fundraiser has been launched for a family who was involved in a serious collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Split Rock Lookout.
The collision occurred on Saturday, January 10th, in the 1200 block of Highway 1, south of Mill Bay and involved two vehicles, a black Mitsubishi SUV and a yellow Lexus hybrid, which collided head-on.
According to preliminary findings by Shawnigan Lake RCMP, the woman driving the yellow Lexus suffered a medical event causing her to cross the centre line and collide with the Mitsubishi, which then veered off-road and down an embankment.
The Lexus was fully engulfed in flames and the woman driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lawrence Dundas has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help aid his family members involved in the crash.
His mother, Dawn Goodwin, broke her clavicle, suffered numerous other fractures and was found to have blood in her lungs following the crash.
According to Lawrence, she had just suffered a stroke last week and this collision will likely set her recovery back significantly.
“She now faces a long and difficult healing process, requiring ongoing medical care and support,” Lawrence wrote.
Stuart Dundas, Lawrence’s brother, suffered broken hips during the crash, along with broken ribs, multiple spinal fractures and a broken leg. He will require numerous surgeries as a result and will be unable to work for the foreseeable future.
“As the family focuses on healing and recovery, the financial burden will continue to grow,” Lawrence continued.
“Medical bills, rehabilitation, lost income and everyday living expenses are quickly adding up. The stress of navigating these costs while coping with pain and uncertainty is more than any family should have to face alone.”
The funds raised by this GoFundMe campaign will reportedly contribute to easing the financial burden placed on Stuart and Dawn as they recover and work to rebuild their lives.
Lawrence noted that every donation, no matter the size, will help cover day-to-day expenses, rehabilitation costs and basic living needs.
“If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser and keeping our family in your thoughts and prayers means more than we can express,” he concluded.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity and support during this unimaginable time.”
As of this publication, the fundraiser has garnered just over $8,300 of its $20,000 goal.
