A fatal motor vehicle collision has closed Highway 1 on the Malahat and is expected to cause significant delays as investigators remain on scene.
According to the Shawnigan Lake RCMP, officers and BC Highway Patrol responded to the crash on Saturday, January 10th, in the 1200 block of Highway 1, south of Mill Bay.
Police say preliminary findings indicate two vehicles collided head-on. One vehicle went down an embankment, while the second vehicle became engulfed in flames.
At least four occupants were involved in the crash. One woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. The condition of the remaining occupants has not been confirmed.
The BC Highway Patrol’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service team has been deployed to assist with the investigation.
Highway 1 is expected to experience significant delays and will remain closed while emergency responders and investigators continue their work.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible, follow the direction of traffic control personnel, and check DriveBC for the latest road updates. Shawnigan Lake Road is being used as an alternate route.
