Comox Valley RCMP make arrest following violent break-in and sexual assault

Comox Valley RCMP’s Major Crime Unit has arrested one suspect in relation to alleged offences that included sexual assault and breaking and entering. 

According to police, the incident occurred on December 28th, at around 7:30 a.m. in Courtenay.

Officers responded to a report of a break and enter at the residence of an 83-year-old woman who was home at the time. 

She described the suspect as a masked man wearing dark clothing and sunglasses.

Since then, police have arrested a 25-year-old man, Matthew Russell McCharles-Carter, who is being charged with several offences. 

His charges include sexual assault, break and enter, unlawful confinement, assault, uttering threats, theft over $5,000, possession of a stolen credit card, possession of property obtained by crime and disguising his face with intent to commit an offence.

“The investigation involved extensive, around-the-clock work by the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit, frontline members, and assistance from the Integrated Forensic Identification Section,” said Comox Valley RCMP in a media release.  

Police say that no further information will be released as the matter is now before the courts.
