Funding set aside for Royal Athletic Park upgrades in Canada’s Budget 2025

The federal government’s proposed Budget 2025 has funding earmarked for the City of Victoria’s Royal Athletic Park upgrades.

Upgrades to Royal Athletic Park were first announced by the City in September 2024, along with the announcement that Centennial Square would be revitalized.

Victoria received a $12.8 million grant from the BC government to complete these projects, with $8.3 million supposed to go to the work needed at Royal Athletic Park.

However, when the City announced their Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan, some of that funding was reallocated to tackling street disorder.

Despite this reallocation, the Royal Athletic Park upgrades could see a new influx of cash, as Canada’s proposed Budget 2025 states that the project will receive funding in an effort to build strong communities through improved local infrastructure.

Royal Athletic Park is among 22 other projects specified to receive this funding in Budget 2025.

“I am delighted to hear the federal government is sending money to Victoria,” said Mayor Marianne Alto in a statement to Victoria Buzz.

“We’ve been pushing Ottawa for funding for infrastructure and other initiatives, and we’re pleased that the budget appears to have allocated funds for Royal Athletic Park.”

Mayor Alto added that the City will know more in the coming weeks when more details have been shared.

A City spokesperson told Victoria Buzz that how much funding may be going toward this project is still unknown and there is no current timeline for the Royal Athletic upgrades at this time.

Additionally, the City is unaware of any other incoming funding specified in Budget 2025 for other projects.

Budget 2025 will not be implemented until it is passed through parliament, and Carney’s Liberal government is shy of a majority. This means they will need support from other parties to enact its fiscal plan.
