VicPD invites retired police officers back to fill vacant positions

Share

VicPD have launched a new initiative aimed at bringing retired officers back to the detachement to help fill vacant positions.

Called the Temporary Member Program, the initiative allows experienced and recently retired officers to return to service in short-term roles.

The goal is to help relieve pressure on active members, provide mentorship, and maintain staffing levels across the department.

VicPD Chief Constable Fiona Wilson said the program reflects a modern approach to policing focused on collaboration and prevention.

“This program allows us to bring back highly skilled, community-minded officers who can share their experience and leadership while supporting our commitment to service excellence and member well-being,” Wilson said.

According to VicPD, officers who return through the program will work alongside community partners, including health and social service organizations and Indigenous leaders, to help address the root causes of crime and enhance public safety.

Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board Chair Micayla Hayes said the program will also help sustain service levels and support new members.

“Bringing back experienced officers through this program helps sustain service levels, support new members, and reinforce the trusted connections VicPD has built in our community,” Hayes said.

Under the new program, temporary officers will be paid 115% of a first-class constable’s hourly rate of $67.22, which, along with benefits, amounts to an annual salary of about $160,000.

Interested officers can apply to rejoin VicPD in a limited-term capacity, contributing to what the department calls “a new era of policing” in Victoria and Esquimalt.
