Caledonia Place, a North Park temporary housing and support site formerly known as Tiny Town, must be shut down and dismantled in March 2026.
The site consists of 30 modular units and has been located on the corner of Caledonia and Vancouver Streets since 2021, just across from Royal Athletic Park.
The site has been operated since its opening by Our Place Society, with the site and modules first being owned by the Alliance to End Homelessness in the Capital Region before BC Housing purchased them.
Caledonia Place has been able to operate and aid the unhoused community of Victoria through a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) for the land they occupied.
However, the site has now exhausted all opportunities for TUPs and has no option other than to shut down operations.
According to BC Housing, work is now underway to wind down operations at Caledonia Place.
“Over the coming weeks and months, BC Housing will be working with Our Place Society to relocate the approximately 30 residents to other appropriate housing in the community,” said a BC Housing spokesperson in a statement to Victoria Buzz.
“Everyone living at Caledonia Place will receive a housing offer to move to a different location. This may be supportive housing, subsidized housing or, in some cases, private market rental housing with the support of a rent supplement.”
BC Housing says that Caledonia Place was always intended to be a temporary measure to aid the unhoused community of Victoria, and has been able to help dozens of people who were previously sheltering on the street, in parks, along the Pandora Street corridor and in shelters.
“Residents are now better equipped to move to supportive housing within the community or more independent subsidized housing, while others may even move to market rentals with the financial assistance,” continued BC Housing.
BC Housing is currently working to identify a new location, intended to be outside the City of Victoria, for the units to be relocated.
The Caledonia Place site, and its operations, will be fully shut down with the modules removed by March 31st.
BC Housing says they are grateful for Victoria for providing the land for this temporary site, and to the residents of the North Park community who have been good neighbours to the tenants of these temporary homes over the past several years.
