Nanaimo RCMP provide update on ‘unspecified threats’ to two local high schools

Earlier this week, Nanaimo RCMP temporarily stationed additional police officers at two Nanaimo high schools: Wellington High School and Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS).

Police and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (SD68) determined this decision would be prudent after the two schools received “unspecified threats.”

The threats were received on Wednesday, October 1st, and officers monitored the schools throughout the day, but scaled back on October 2nd.

Nanaimo RCMP say that now, based on their findings and the investigation into the veiled threats, SD68 and police have decided to further scale back the police presence on school grounds.

According to investigators, the unspecified threats have not been substantiated, so officers will not be posted at the schools for the duration of the day on Friday October 3rd.

Officers are now asking for the public’s assistance in their investigation.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, a call with information was received early in the investigation; however, the individual did not identify themselves during the call.

“To properly assess the information, we are asking for this person to please call back so that their information can be assessed further,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Anyone with information on this matter is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345, and speak with Cpl. Jordan Mullen of the RCMP Youth Liaison Unit.
