Earthquakes Canada recorded the 3.1-magnitude quake just before 5:30 a.m. near Salt Spring Island, about 13 kilometres north of Sidney and south of Ruckle Provincial Park.

The tremor struck at a depth of around 16 kilometres and was described as “lightly felt” in several communities in the region.

As of this publication, 81 people have reported feeling the early-morning shake. With the agency saying it was lightly felt on the Saanich Peninsula.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the event at a slightly weaker 2.9 magnitude and at a depth of 12.4 kilometres.

No damage or injuries have been reported, but the brief rumble was enough to wake some residents from their sleep, especially in southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
