Nanaimo RCMP have temporarily stationed extra police officers at two Nanaimo high schools: Wellington High School and Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS).
Police say that after consulting with Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (SD68), it was decided that extra officers would be sent to the schools out of an abundance of caution.
This precaution was decided after Nanaimo RCMP reportedly received an unspecified report that was directed at both high school facilities.
Because of the reported veiled threat, officers will be at both schools for the duration of the day, will be controlling access to both facilities and will be actively monitoring the grounds.
“We recognize the presence of additional officers at these schools may be uncomfortable for some,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
“Please be assured that the safety of the students, the staff and the facilities is paramount to us. If anyone has any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to the officers.”
Once the school day was over for students, officers provided an update to the increased presence.
Nanaimo RCMP says officers were visible at both schools, and with the assistance of school staff, access to the both schools and the surrounding grounds was monitored.
Police say no incidents were reported at either school.
With respect to the next school day, Thursday October 2nd, RCMP school liaison officers will be tasked with maintaining a presence at both schools throughout the day.
Police concluded their update by stating that their investigation continues, but still have not provided context regarding the “unspecified threat.”
