The Victoria Royals will now have a new fearless leader, and it’s a familiar face we’ve all seen around Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for quite some time.
The club announced Wednesday afternoon that forward Reggie Newman has taken on the role, marking him as the 10th captain in team history.
The Kamloops product is entering his fifth season with the Royals, and has been a mainstay of the team during his tenure.
Newman was drafted 72nd overall in the fourth round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft by Victoria, and in 232 regular season games with the Royals, Newman has scored 44 goals and 68 assists for 112 points.
The newly-minted captain has also recently returned to Victoria from the Winnipeg Jets, as he was a part of their Prospects Showdown team in Montreal.
“Reggie leads by example through his work ethic and commitment to getting better each day” said Royals’ Head Coach James Patrick.
“He is respected by his teammates and has earned the opportunity to lead our team”.
According to the Royals, assistant captains will be rotated to start the season and will be finalized at a later date.
You can catch Reggie and the rest of the Royals squad tomorrow, Friday, September 19th for their home opener versus the brand new Penticton Vees.
Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m., and tickets are still available here.
There will also be a pre-game BBQ, giveaways and more prior to puck drop, so make sure you get there early!
