Nanaimo RCMP have launched an investigation into an incident which resulted in a dog being shot over the weekend.
At around 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, September 27th, multiple calls were received by police, reporting a shooting, near the intersection of Holly Avenue and Rosehill Street.
Police say initial reports were that a dog had been shot, and that two individuals had fled in a white SUV.
According to investigators, it is believed that the shooting was related to a heated argument which had occurred in the street a few minutes before the shooting.
Police say they also believe the parties involved in the argument are known to each other.
“Anytime a firearm is discharged in a public neighbourhood there is significant risk, particularly in this case as there was an elementary school in close proximity,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Nanaimo RCMP say that contrary to initial media reports, the dog survived the shooting after being treated by an emergency veterinarian.
To aid in their investigation, police are asking anyone living in a one block radius of Holly Avenue and Rosehill Street, to review their home surveillance systems and/or dash cameras between 9:15 a.m. and 9:55 a.m. on the morning of the shooting.
Investigators are looking for footage showing a white SUV and any individuals associated with that vehicle.
