Oak Bay police are warning the public after a resident fell victim to a phone scam involving someone pretending to be from Telus.
On September 5th, officers started investigating a case where the complainant received a call from someone claiming to work for Telus.
The caller promised to lower the resident’s monthly bill and provide a new phone in exchange for their current device.
After sending their old phone, the victim never got a replacement. Telus later confirmed that the offer was a scam.
According to police, this scam has been reported in the area and is similar to incidents in other parts of Canada.
In each case, the victim is convinced to send in their existing phone with the promise of a free upgrade and lower rates, but the new device never arrives.
Police are urging residents to be cautious about unsolicited offers and to contact their service provider directly if they get suspicious calls.
Anyone with information should contact Oak Bay Police at 250-592-2424 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
