The legacy of a longtime radio host will live on though a new music foundation.
This week, the Dylan Willows Foundation for Music (DWFM) was launched in Victoria to celebrate the beloved broadcaster and music-lover’s legacy.
Willows was only 45-years-old when he passed away and was a well-known and highly-respected figure in the radio broadcasting industry, to his loyal listeners and those in the local music scene.
He brought with him an incomparable positivity and drive in all his endeavours, but especially to The Zone @ 91-3’s morning show, which he hosted for nearly 20 years.
Willows was an important community figure through his tireless advocacy for emerging musicians in Victoria’s music scene.
The newly launched DWFM was founded by Willows’ wife, Sam Szabo, along with a team of leaders from Victoria’s radio, business and music communities.
The aim of the DWFM is to carry forward his life’s work by supporting young and emerging musicians on Vancouver Island through mentorship, education and performance opportunities.
“Dylan gave everything to the music,” said Szabo. “Now we give it back.”
“This foundation ensures his spirit continues to support and inspire the community he loved so deeply.”
Though the DWFM will be a multi-faceted approach to supporting up-and-coming artists, its first initiative is going to be ‘The Music Lab,’ a weekend-long bootcamp designed for young or emerging artists who are just getting started in the music industry to learn the ropes.
On November 15th and 16th, chosen participants will receive a crash course in music essentials, such as music production, artist management, navigating streaming platforms and industry roles.
The hope is that participants will receive the tools and confidence they need to take the next steps in their musical journey.
According to the DWMF, applications will open to those interested on October 1st through the Foundation’s website.
The Music Lab program will be free to attend thanks to funding and support from Creative BC, the Province of British Columbia, The Zone @ 91-3, the LakeTown Benevolent Society and the program’s intended event space, which has been donated by VIATEC.
The DWMF operates as a non-profit organization, and relies on donations as well as the grant funding they have received.
Those hoping to support Willows’ vision and the mission of the foundation in his name can donate to the cause through the DWMF website.
Additionally, the Foundation will be holding an online auction fundraiser from September 22nd to 29th in an effort to help fund their initiatives.
Full details and auction items are available online here.
