A BC Ferries sailing to Vancouver Island was delayed Wednesday afternoon after a man went overboard shortly after leaving the Tsawwassen terminal.

According to BC Ferries, the Spirit of Vancouver Island stopped at around 1:45 p.m. to respond to the emergency.

The Queen of New Westminster also assisted. Rescue boats were sent out, and the crew recovered the individual from the water.

In an email statement, Delta Police Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley said the man was taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

“It is believed the man jumped overboard a few miles from shore. He was picked up by ferry staff and transported back to the terminal,” Whiteley said.

“Our members are actively investigating the incident to determine why and how he ended up in the water.”

Video from the vessel shows crew members acting quickly to carry out the rescue.

In an update around 2 p.m., BC Ferries stated that the person was taken back to the Tsawwassen terminal, where a BC Emergency Health Services ambulance awaited.

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 1:37 p.m. today about an incident involving a passenger off a BC Ferries vessel at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. An ambulance with primary care paramedics responded to the scene,” said Paramedic Public Information Officer Brian Twaites.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment and transported one patient to hospital in stable condition.”

The Spirit of Vancouver Island is retrieving its rescue boat before continuing its journey. BC Ferries expects a delay of about one hour.
