$8.3 million roundabout project set to start on Highway 4 in Port Alberni

A new roundabout is going to be built in Port Alberni at Highway 4 and Beaver Creek Road with the goal of making the intersection safer for residents, marina users and tourists traveling to and from the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Currently, the intersection of Highway 4 and Beaver Creek Road is controlled only by stop signs and will be replaced with a roundabout.

The Province says this improvement will reduce congestion, enhance sight lines, support future traffic demands and eliminate the need for left turns.

Additionally, multi-use paths, sidewalks and bike-friendly shoulders will make the intersection safer and more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.

This endeavour will also reportedly improve access to Clutesi Haven Marina through widened and reconfigured entrances.

“This will help reduce highway congestion and support commercial, Indigenous and recreational fishers,” said the Province in a media release.

BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit has awarded the $8.3 million contract to Nanaimo-based Windley Contracting Ltd.

The Province says that work is scheduled to begin this fall, and will take around one year to complete.

Traffic changes and detours may be expected through the project’s construction, along with night-time paving and temporary sidewalk or shoulder closures.

During this time, access to the marina will remain open.
