VicPD release footage of suspect in synagogue vandalism incident (VIDEO)

VicPD have now released CCTV footage, in addition to a photograph, of a suspect in the ongoing investigation into the hateful vandalism of the Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue. 

This footage has been released in the hopes that the suspect can be identified by members of the public. 

This incident of vandalism took place in the early hours of Saturday, August 2nd. The front-facing facade of the synagogue, located at 1461 Blanshard Street. 

The Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Western Canada. 

Police say the investigation is being led by VicPD’s General Investigation Services, in collaboration with their Hate Crimes Coordinator. 

Following the news of the incident, Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto condemned the act of vandalism, saying she was “saddened and disappointed” by what was written on the synagogue. 

“Hate has no place in our community,” Mayor Alto said following the incident.  

“Victorians are kind and welcoming, and this incident does not represent the values that I know Victorians share.”
