RCMP bomb scare in Nanaimo ends with unexpected twist inside package

Share

First words of advice.. don’t mail a package to Nanaimo RCMP wrapped in duct tape.

A tense scene at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment last Friday turned out to be more of a head-scratcher than a threat.

At around 3 p.m. on July 11th, a suspicious package arrived at the front counter of the police detachment. According to Nanaimo RCMP, it was wrapped in duct tape, mailed locally, and came with no return address, enough to raise serious concerns among officers.

Out of an abundance of caution, police shut down the detachment to the public and contacted the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to examine the package.

After a thorough inspection, the all-clear was given. A random assortment of toys and books was located inside the package.

Investigators later located the sender, who told officers there was no ill intent and apologized for causing the alarm.

The detachment has since reopened, and no charges are expected.
