A cougar was spotted by a student this afternoon near Doncaster Elementary School in Saanich.
The sighting occurred around 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12th, in the wooded area to the east of the school, near the intersection of Thistle Street and Cedar Avenue.
Both BC Conservation and Doncaster Elementary are aware of the situation, according to a media release by Saanich Police.
Victoria Buzz reached out to the school to learn more about the safety precautions being taken, but details on their specific response plan have not yet been released.
Cougar sightings are rare in urban areas, but it’s important for the public to remain vigilant.
If you encounter a cougar, experts recommend staying calm and avoiding sudden movements. It’s important not to run, as this can trigger a predator instinct.
Instead, try to make yourself look larger by standing tall and raising your arms or opening your jacket. Slowly back away from the animal without turning your back on it.
If possible, find a safe area, such as a building or vehicle, until the cougar has left the area.
Authorities urge anyone who spots a cougar to immediately report it to police or BC Conservation to ensure that appropriate measures can be taken.
