Open-source bike map of Victoria shows most up-to-date bicycle routes

Share

Victoria is widely known as one of the most bikeable cities in Canada, and now cyclists have access to a new tool to plan their routes.

Over the last few years, several new bike lanes/routes have been added to the Capital Regional District’s (CRD) all ages and abilities network of cycling routes.

It can be hard to keep up with all the progress that Victoria and its neighbouring municipalities are making, but now there is a tool to see all the new and available routes in the region at a glance.

CyclOSM is an online resource that uses OpenStreetMap data—an open source and free software—allowing anyone to make additions or revisions to the bike route map.

On the map’s legend, streets can be identified as being separate paths, separated bike lanes, bike lanes on the side of a road and even where there are bike-friendly ramps beside stairways.

For those hoping to get this map downloaded to their phones, it is available through a few different apps, one of which is OSMAnd.

This option serves as an alternative resource to other, more common online maps and apps such as Google Maps that typically do not have up-to-date bike route options.

With GoByBike Week underway, this is a great resource to use when planning your commute to and from work, or your next recreational bike outing.

Make sure to share this one with your cycling friends!
