An online fundraiser has been launched with proceeds going toward the Central Saanich United Church, which was recently broken into and robbed.
According to Wendy, the organizer of this GoFundMe, the intruders smashed a heritage window that was over 100-years-old in order to gain entry and left a trail of damage in their wake.
“They stole nearly all our audio-visual equipment, including a 98-inch LED screen from our new Shadywood Hall, mixers, and even our AED defibrillator,” said Wendy.
“They pulled equipment from the walls, leaving gouges behind, and took all the food collected for the local Food Bank. They even left the sound board out in the rain.”
The fundraiser is seeking $20,000 as a goal to replace the stolen audio/visual equipment, repair and restore the broken window and walls, strengthen security to avoid future break-ins and continue working for the community.

The Central Saanich United Church was originally called the Shady Creek Church and was founded in 1862. In 1895, the current church was built on the site and has been serving community members ever since.
The church was established by Chares and Nancy Alexander, Black pioneers who settled in this area as farmers before building the church.
Now, 130-years-later, the church stands as one of the only remaining monuments of Black British Columbians’ contributions to the area.

Wendy says that any donation will help in the community’s efforts to restore the church and recoup their losses–whether it’s a $5 or $500 donation.
As of this publication, the fundraiser has raised $4,150. You can donate to the GoFundMe campaign here.
