Uber will be expanding their rideshare program across the province, including on Vancouver Island.

On Wednesday, May 28th, the company is launching BC-wide, growing its service reach to include cities like Duncan, Nanaimo, Courtenay and more.

Additionally, it will be expanding on its existing service reach in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna.

Established in 2009, Uber lets users book rides through a smartphone app. The company expanded into BC in May 2023  following a licence transfer approved by the Passenger Transportation Board, allowing the company to operate province-wide.

Uber officially launched in Victoria and Kelowna the following month.

According to a media release, many community organizations are supportive of the company and its expansion, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, Hope Air, and the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association (BCRFA).

“As ridesharing expands in B.C., more people will have access to a safe way home, helping reduce the risks on our roads,” said Steve Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer, MADD Canada.

“Whether in a big city or a smaller community, every safe ride is a step toward preventing impaired driving and protecting lives.”

Ride availability may vary depending on the number of drivers in each area, but Keerthana Rang, Corporate Communications Lead, said the number of drivers grows every day.

“Driving with Uber is a great flexible earning opportunity for those with a safe driving record,” continued Rang.

“People can earn money on their own terms, they control where and when they work, and are free to use other apps at the same time as they’re on Uber, and choose which trips to accept.”

If driving for Uber is of interest, they’re offering a $500 incentive for eligible drivers who complete their profile and take 10 trips within the first four weeks.
