Nanaimo RCMP revealed the reason for a 35-minute delay at the Duke Point ferry terminal this past weekend was due to a driver crashing into a cement support beam while disembarking.

Police say the incident took place at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 25th, while the ferry was unloading after a journey from Tsawwassen.

Witnesses to the collision reportedly told police that the woman driving was seen on her phone while disembarking, which may have led to the crash.

Police noted that the impact caused significant damage to the front end of her vehicle and resulted in the vehicle’s air bags being deployed.

Firefighters and paramedics attended the scene and treated the woman for injuries she sustained from the crash.

The driver ended up having to be transported to hospital for further medical treatment and her vehicle was towed from the scene.

She was also issued a $368 fine for using an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.
