Cougar spotted near Uptown prompts safety warning for Saanich residents

A cougar sighting in a busy Saanich neighbourhood has authorities reminding the public to be cautious—especially if you’re heading out for an evening walk or letting pets out in the yard.

Over the past 24 hours, Saanich Police say they’ve received several reports of a cougar roaming the area.

Around 10 p.m. Monday night, officers spotted the large cat in the 3800-block of Rowland Avenue, darting through residential backyards. The animal was then seen crossing Highway 17 and later reported on the Lochside Trail near Swan Lake Park, between Darwin Avenue and Saanich Road.

A video posted to social media shows the cougar prowling near a residential complex just north of Uptown Shopping Centre—directly across from Saanich’s main fire hall.

Police say the BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified, and officers are continuing to search for the cougar.

In the meantime, the public is being urged to use caution while in the area.

“The behaviour of the cougar is concerning,” said Saanich Police in a release. “Do not approach the animal, and if you encounter it, walk away slowly, then contact 911 and the BC Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.”

While cougar sightings in urban neighbourhoods are uncommon, they’re not unheard of—especially with so many natural trails and green spaces nearby. For those who spend time outdoors, here are 13 quick tips to keep in mind during cougar season:

While outdoors:

  • Hike in groups and make noise to avoid surprising a cougar.
  • Keep children close at all times.
  • Carry bear spray.
  • Watch for fresh tracks.
  • If you see cougar kittens, leave immediately—mom won’t be far.
  • Keep pets leashed or fenced.
  • Avoid carrying food or food scraps that give off strong smells.
  • Be extra alert during heavy wind and rain.

If you encounter a cougar:

  • Stay calm.
  • Never run.
  • Face the cougar and back away slowly.
  • Speak firmly, yell, and throw rocks if needed to appear threatening.
  • If attacked, fight back with anything available—many people have survived by doing so.

For now, residents are asked to keep an eye out and report any new sightings as the search continues.
