Nanaimo RCMP arrested a 38-year-old man after responding to reports of a firearm being discharged in a rural South Wellington residence.
According to police, just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27th, reports came in regarding the shots fired and numerous police officers responded.
When Nanaimo RCMP arrived on scene, the man reportedly walked out of the home and was taken into custody without incident and a shotgun was located nearby.
Police searched the home for any victims or occupants, but none were found. The only damage to the residence was a gunshot to the front door.
To further the investigation, police secured the home overnight while investigators sought approval to enter and search the home.
Police say this was an isolated incident with no further risk to the public.
Despite the man surrendering himself to police without incident, police say that while responding to the incident, some vehicles were not yielding to police cruisers with lights and sirens activated.
“This was an extremely violent incident,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP, in contradiction to the reported events of the incident.
“Being unnecessarily delayed by other vehicles not following the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act to allow emergency vehicles to pass, increased the danger to the general public.”
The arrested suspect faces numerous weapons charges and is expected to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court sometime on Wednesday, May 28th.
