142 impaired drivers caught by Sooke RCMP last year alone

Sooke RCMP recently revealed that in 2024, there were 142 motorists caught driving while impaired. 

This represents a 22% increase from 2023’s 116 impaired drivers caught in Sooke.

According to Sooke RCMP detachment commander S/Sgt. Greg Willcocks, the increase in impaired drivers caught coincides with an increase in police resources on the roads in Sooke. 

“With the change to 24 hour policing we have more officers on the road and we are focusing our efforts on catching people who are impaired by alcohol and drugs,” said Willcocks. 

“If you are planning on driving impaired in Sooke know [sic] that you will get caught. Please plan for a sober ride home.”

Similar to the number of impaired drivers increasing year-over-year, Sooke RCMP says that 41 motorists who were caught driving while intoxicated in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 24% increase.

“These numbers are increasing but it is largely because Sooke is one of the fastest growing communities in the province and we are growing substantially every year,” Willcocks continued. 

“With more and more people moving to Sooke we are going to come across more people who are impaired because our population is larger.” 

Sooke RCMP added that anyone who sees a suspected impaired driver should safely call police and report them.
