A heartbreaking incident in Campbell River has prompted a public warning from police after a teen died from a suspected drug overdose.
According to RCMP, the youth experienced a medical emergency believed to be linked to a combination of Dilaudid (Hydromorphone)—a potent prescription painkiller—and non-prescription cough medication.
The tragic outcome has led investigators to raise concerns about the dangers of misusing both prescription and over-the-counter substances.
“It’s extremely important for youth and parents to understand the dangers that are posed by all drugs,” said Cst. Maury Tyre.
“That includes prescription and non-prescription medications. Although police offer drug and alcohol education in schools, these conversations need to continue at home and in the community. It’s about safeguarding our youth.”
Tyre emphasized that overdose deaths affect people from all walks of life—not just those struggling with addiction, but also those experimenting, often without fully understanding the risks.
Campbell River RCMP offered their deepest condolences to the teen’s family and friends and said no further details about the case would be released out of respect for their privacy.
