Looking for a springtime stroll?
A new study by hotel chain Premier Inn has pinpointed the world’s most vibrant gardens, and Vancouver Island’s Butchart Gardens has ranked within the top five for North America.
Butchart Gardens was a dream that began for Jennie Butchart in 1912, and now, the famous gardens are home to over 900 plant varieties.
This beloved garden is a National Historic Site of Canada, and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
It features five different sections: the sunken garden, rose garden, Japanese garden, Italian garden and Mediterranean garden. Additionally, there’s a tea house and a carousel building.
Sitting in 4th place on Premier Inn’s list of North American gardens, Butchart Gardens was given a vibrancy score of 192.
Other gardens on the North America list includes Florida’s Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, which placed 1st with a vibrancy score of 196.
The garden is 83-acres and is named after Dr. David Fairchild, a pioneering botanist who introduced thousands of exotic species to the country.
Using a blend of tech and colour theory, Premier Inn analysed unedited satellite images of more than 150 gardens across the globe.
By pulling hue, saturation, and brightness (HSB) values from each garden image, they determined a “vibrancy score” based on how rich and intense the colours appeared.
So, if you’re looking to add some colour to your next getaway, Butchart Gardens might be worth the trip!
