Langford just scored some new green space!
On Tuesday, April 22nd, city officials and neighbours gathered at 822 Wren Place to cut the ribbon on the new Porcher Park.
This space is a re-imagined urban refuge brimming with open lawns, an accessible playground and space for a community garden.
The event featured the distribution of complimentary seed packages, a ceremonial tree planting, tours of the community gardens and light refreshments.
Porcher Park was first dedicated as a wildlife haven back in 1971, and in 2024, the Langford council green-lit a budget to expand it into what it is today.
“The expansion of Porcher Park brings access to much-needed green space for residents of Langford’s downtown core,” said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford.
“We extend our gratitude to all the volunteers who donated their time to restore the park and ensure it thrives for generations to come.”
Partnering with the Greater Victoria Green Team and FireSmart BC, crews yanked out invasive species such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom, and in their place, more than 300 native shrubs and trees were planted.
“Seeing Porcher Park transform through community-powered restoration has been nothing short of inspiring. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people and nature connect,” said Kaitlin Warren, Program Manager, Greater Victoria Green Team.
“We are so excited to keep growing this relationship—and this park—together.”

Additionally, the community garden ties directly into Langford’s 2023‑2027 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes local food security and easy access to nature.
Specifically, the garden, which is the first of its kind in Langford, will be operated by Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS).
The UFRIS is a non-profit organization based in Langford that supports households with rising food costs.
Once planting is underway later this season, residents can expect raised beds, shared tools and plenty of neighbourly collaboration.
If you wish to be a part of this community garden, residents are invited to enter a lottery for plots, scheduled for Saturday, May 10th.
For now, swing by, breathe in the cedar‑scented air and watch a once‑overlooked refuge blossom into downtown’s newest hangout spot.
A picnic blanket and Porcher Park might just be the perfect pairing.
