Following Canadian actor Mike Myers mouthing the words “elbows up” while wearing a shirt that read “Canada is not for sale” on Saturday Night Live earlier this year, a movement was born.
Myers made this remark in regards to United States President Donald Trump’s intentions to make Canada the 51st state in the US.
The phrase “Elbows Up” has its origins in hockey, and is in reference to a player protecting themselves and fighting back when antagonized.
Now, Baggins Shoes, a Victoria-based business is trying to get a custom pair of high top shoes which read “Elbows Up” to the Canadian actor best known for his work in Wayne’s World, Austin Powers and as a cast member of SNL.
Since Myers’ now-iconic SNL moment, there have been an abundance of T-shirts and hats that read “Elbows Up,” but Baggins Co-owner Tara Savrtka thought that a pair of shoes would be a unique piece of protest memorabilia.
“We want to show our support for Canada and express our thanks to those in the limelight standing up to those who feel we aren’t a valid country and community,” said Savrtka.
“Our goal is to help spread awareness and show our customers we’re a Canadian company first.”
Savrtka posted a video on Baggins’ Instagram account this week in order to launch the campaign which seeks to get a pair of these new custom shoes to Myers.
Additionally, Baggins Shoes will have these shoes available for purchase on their website, along with long sleeve shirts that read “Elbows Up” along the sleeve elbows.

Since Myers’ comment and his recent endorsement of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s election campaign, the actor has come under scrutiny for being involved in Canadian politics when he has spent the better part of the last two decades living in the United States.
Despite this scrutiny, Myers remains steadfast in his affection for Canada and all things Canadian.
