The Canadian government’s Ministry of Health has issued a recall for a tahini product that has been found to be contaminated with peanuts.
The recall on Greenworld Fine Foods tahini was issued on March 6th, and is of concern due to peanuts being a serious allergen among some Canadians and British Columbians.
The recalled product is specifically Greenworld’s 18 kilogram tahini, which has been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.
The affected product was mostly distributed to restaurants, hotels, catering companies and any other business using a large quantity of the product.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises that this product not be sold, distributed, served or used.
Tahini is a condiment made from ground sesame seeds and is commonly used in Middle Eastern cooking. It is not meant to contain peanuts.
However, sometimes those impacted by peanut allergies are also allergic to sesame.
According to Health Canada, peanut allergies are one of the most common food allergies, and are considered a priority food allergen.
Around two in 100 Canadians are impacted by peanut allergies.
