Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he has spoken with United States Donald Trump about the onslaught of tariffs against Canada in an effort to work out a mutually agreeable solution between the two countries.
On the morning of Friday, March 28th, with exactly one month until election day, Carney spoke directly with President Trump.
According to Carney, the conversation was constructive in trying to garner a better relationship between Canada and the US.
The two leaders have reportedly agreed to begin comprehensive negotiations about a new economic and security relationship that could begin immediately following the election.
In the meantime, Carney and Trump have agreed that the two countries’ international trade and commerce delegates would engage in conversations to address immediate economic concerns.
Carney says that he told the president that he would be working hard for the next month to earn the right to represent Canada in those discussions.
Additionally, he reportedly told Trump that his government will implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy.
This comes after the latest announcement of additional tariffs to impact Canada that are slated to go into effect on April 2nd.
“I reject any attempt to weaken Canada—to wear us down, to break us so that America can own us. That will never happen,” Carney said in a press conference held yesterday regarding the new tariffs on the auto sector.
Currently, the Liberals are leading in federal polls, with 41% of the popular vote, while the Conservatives have 37%, the NDP are polling at 9%, Bloc Québécois have 6% and the Green Party have 3%.
