A man in his 40s had quite the adventure Monday afternoon, but unfortunately for him, it didn’t end well.
According to West Shore RCMP, the man was riding his electric unicycle at what police described as a “high rate of speed” on the Leigh Road interchange near the Trans-Canada Highway.
When police tried to pull him over, he made a break for it and continued on.
But instead of getting away, he hit a cement barrier, flipped a few times, and ended up in hospital with minor injuries.
Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening, but his unicycle career might be over.
To make matters worse for him, the man was issued over $1,000 in fines under the Motor Vehicle Act for a range of offenses, including operating an uninsured vehicle, not having a driver’s license, and failing to stop for police.
He was also arrested on outstanding warrants after his hospital visit.
As if this wasn’t enough of a reminder, electric unicycles, hoverboards, and other similar devices are a no-go on public roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks under BC’s Motor Vehicle Act, including the Trans-Canada Highway.
While electric kick-scooters are part of a pilot project in some communities, including Victoria, it’s still not a free-for-all for personal electric transportation.
