Supreme Court of Canada joins municipalities and organizations in leaving X

Share

The list of Canadian organizations dropping X as a social media platform continues to climb.

On Wednesday, February 26th, the Supreme Court of Canada joined several  Canadian municipalities, businesses and organizations in announcing it would no longer communicate using X.

X (formerly Twitter) is owned by Elon Musk, who has deep ties to the newly formed US government led by President Donald Trump.

Although the relationship between the United States and Canada is tense right now with a looming trade war, the Supreme Court did not allude that their choice to leave X has anything to do with the international trade matter.

Instead, the Supreme Court says that they are leaving X to focus their efforts on other ways of communication with Canadians.

“The decision is based on strategic priorities and resource allocation,” said the Supreme Court of Canada in a statement.

“We are focusing on platforms that allow us to best serve the public and provide relevant information about the Court’s work within our limited resources.”

The Supreme Court added that it has been bolstering its online presence in other ways with the launch of a newly redesigned website that features a “What’s New” feed, and they have established a new YouTube account.

In addition to the Supreme Court of Canada leaving X, several municipalities in BC, on Vancouver Island and within Greater Victoria have either already stopped using the platform, or are currently considering leaving it.

View Royal was one of the first to ditch the platform back in late January at the direction of Mayor Sid Tobias.

More recently, Island Health and Parksville have announced they will be leaving the platform.

“Island Health will be posting less on this platform, focusing on other digital spaces where we will continue to provide the best health & care info for everyone across our region,” said Island Health in one of their last X posts.

However, they added that urgent information would still be shared on the platform, such as drug overdose advisories.

Victoria too is in the process of having City staff consider ditching the X platform for communications.

Many organizations and municipalities that are opting to stop posting on X are transitioning to using similar platforms such as Bluesky and Meta’s Threads.
